SANITATION IN OUR VARIOUS MARKETS IN ACCRA

SANITATION IN OUR VARIOUS MARKET CENTERS IN ACCRA

Agbobloshie is the nickname of a commercial district on the Korle lagoon of the Odaw river near the center of Accra, near the slum called the Old Fadama. The Agbobloshie site became known as a destination for extenally generated auto mobile electronic scrap collected form mostly the Western world.
Filt has taken over part of the Agbobloshie and  Kasoa markets.Ordinarily, markets are expected to be the cleanest places for the simple reason that, that’s where foodstuffs are sold for human consumption.
Ironically, that is not tha case for most markets in Ghana especially in the capital Accra and Kasoa.A report by WHO in 2015,ranked Ghana the seventh (7th) country in the world. The report also said 7,500 children die annually in Ghana from diarrhea that is link to unsafe drinking water from poor sanitation.
The Agbobloshie market is a vivid reflection of this picture as painted by WHO,it however seems that little is being done to salvage the situation, despite the huge number of deaths recorded annually from sanitation related ailments.Market women who trade at the Agbobloshie  and Kasoa has over the period lamented over the state of the markets calling on the responsible agencies to do the needful. These agencies have however not heeded any of the complaints by the  traders.Traders say they pay a daily levy of 1gh cedi to city authorities yet they do not know what the monies are being used for.

Comparing Agbobloshie to Kasoa market, there is no difference because traders over there are complaining about how the place is crowded and choked with filt.Interacting with these markets women as well as buyers it was clear that the situation is obviously affecting their businesses and this is in spite of the health implication.

Apart from the choked gutters and heaps of rubbish along the road, the market bears a heap of rubbish which according to the traders is collected once a month. The refuse however appears to have been uncollected for months.Management of refuse in this area is poor. When they sweep, they dump the refuse at the station and no one transfers it to another location. Now the refuse are heap, when finally a vehicle comes to transfer it,we are unable to stand the stench,a market woman told me.

Another one lamented that, the issue with the refuse really disturbs us.Because of it when it rains people don’t want to buy. They should work on it because we can not fathom the situation.Hmmm ,did you see the refuse by the roadside, how will people come in to buy? We pay tolls, all the monies should be used to salvage the situation .Government should act swiftly, for us who sell vegetables because the situation is unbearable. These are some poor health crisis and challenges traders pass through everyday.
