KAYAYE BUSINESS IN MARKETS

KAYAYE BUSINESS IN MARKETS

Headporting has been a prevailing work for a while now though it seems outrageous to people sometimes. In Ghana it is termed as KAYAYE a plural form of kayayoo which means female haedportters since” kaya”means load and “ye”means female.Though only females were mentioned in the above description that does not mean only females practice it in Ghana.

On a real note, headporting in Ghana constitutes both male and females regardless of ones appearance as in ages, stature and sex. Most of the people come from different regions in Ghana and other countries due to social economic conditions to search for jobs.Since life isn’t that easy when one arrives in a new area, these people end up on street especially in Capital cities such as Accra,Kumasi,Koforidua and other rural- urban areas that have small or big market and work extremely hard to make a living.

Some of those who come down to these cities constitute children below 15 years or even younger adults which includes nursing mothers.Kayaye make business at the market each day especially during market days since people purchase goods at these periods.During the day, they roam at busy sites of markets where people mostly purchase goods. They take the opportunity to make money in order to fend for themselves and their families .

They work by conveying goods of different kinds ranging from those of lower weights to heavy ones such as bags of flour, rice, sugar, onions and cement bags among others on their heads and on trucks that can be pushed and charge for the services they render. Some of them have been working for years and it has being quite a normal job for them.

They occasionally receive tips from people which often comes in handy though these tips are given as a result of a pleasant job done. After everyone has departed to their homes at sunset;some of them sleep or balconies of people’s shop and even on top of tables since they have no permanent abode.

Should it rain at night these people have to spend their night to search for a place that will be more manageable since they have no other options than to endure the weather till day break.Infact, some of the challenges they face are quite appauling as some of the people refuse to pay the exact amount of money being charged but rather pay far lesser than required.
