PLIGHTS OF TRADERS UNDER UMBRELLAS IN MARKETS

PLIGHTS OF TRADERS UNDER UMBRELLAS  AT MARKETS IN HARSH WEATHER  CONDITIONS

Market is a settlement where business activities takes place involving traders and customers. In Accra, there are various settlements where these operations are observed, among such is the Kaneshie market,Agbobloshie market,Awoshie market and Mallam market to mention a few. Within the above market mentioned, there several modes of how goods are displayed to attract customers to patronize.Traders often times exhibit their wares such as clothes, footwears, provisions, vegetables, stationeries among others in shops, some on tables, others in containers and some under umbrellas.

Visiting the Mallam market located on the Kasoa-Kaneshie stretch, which has served the various needs of residents of Weija,Mallam and McCarthy hill,I  observed that about 90% of the traders are operating under umbrellas which from the look of things are faded meaning it has been used for a long time thus that is the only mode of displaying goods for purchase by customers.
Again, the umbrellas do serve the purpose of sheltering traders from the hot heat emanating from the scorching sun as well as,in times of heavy down pours.

Enquiring for the reason behind all the umbrella settlements, information given was that, the land has been released to traders temporarily for business transactions, since the land is owned by an individual and as such traders pay monies to the landlord to have a portion to transact business.Due to this reason, traders can not put up containers and shops since the landlord can claim the land for the purpose the landlord wishes for.

Flooding is a big deal for traders and customers of Mallam market in times of heavy downpours as it is a flood prone area and at times halt the operation of business.Often times when it rains during the day, when business is in session, traders together with theirs wares are left at the mercy of the weather since they don’t have realiable storage area to protect the wares from the rains hence damaging the perishable goods such as vegetables and cereals to mention a few.

Customers on the other hand hardly visit the market in times of flood but rather prefer shopping at other market centers for goods, since the environment is not conducive for transactions and prioritizing their health before anything else.
